Why Does My Air Conditioner Trip The Breaker?

If you feel that your AC is tripping the circuit breaker in your home too often, then you will need to look into why this is happening. Circuit breakers are there to help your electrical system from overloading and that is why they may switch off. It is normal for this to happen once in a while, however if it is a continual occurrence in relation to your AC system, then it is time to look at what is triggering it.

Here are some reasons your circuit breaker may be tripping and how you can go about fixing the problem.

Dirty Air Filters

The easiest thing to check first is that your AC filter is clean. If your filter is dirty your AC unit will have to use more force to push the air through, therefore using more electricity, this can cause your electrical system to short out. Take the filter out and make sure it is clean, if there is excess build up, clean or replace the filter.

Low Refrigerant

When your AC is losing refrigerant it causes the system to work harder, this means your AC is using more electricity and this may overload your system causing the circuit breaker to trip. You may want to contact a repair expert to check your refrigerant levels and check if there are any leaks or issues.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

A frozen evaporator coils can cause the same problem when it comes to your AC tripping the circuit breaker. Your system has to work harder to push air through. A frozen evaporator coil may occur when you have insufficient refrigerant, it can also happen when several other things are happening within your AC system. It may be due to your thermostat failing, a broken blower, or that your AC system is too small or big for your home. All of the above problems require a qualified technician to diagnose and fix the problem.

Faulty Compressor

A bigger issue that may cause your circuit breaker to trip is that your AC systems compressor is starting to fail. The compressor is a critical part of your AC system. A compressor should have a 12-15 year life span, if your compressor is still relatively new, it is possible there is something else causing the issue. In relation to your circuit breaker and the compressor, your compressor may have electrical failure, this can cause the voltage or current to not balance properly and can cause your circuit to trip. As the compressor is the main engine to your AC you will want to have a professional take a look at your system.

Malfunctioning Circuit Breakers

If you feel you have addressed the following issues with your AC yet your circuit breaker is still tripping constantly then you may need to have your breaker looked at. Circuit breakers that are overloaded and short out constantly can start to wear out. You can use a tool called an ohmmeter to check if your circuit breaker needs replacing, if the ohmmeter reading is higher than 5 ohms then you may want to look have having your circuit breaker replaced.
