How to Know if My AC Is Low on Freon?

Summertime in Baltimore can be hot, muggy, and uncomfortable!  As any Charm City resident knows, finding a place to cool off and escape the summer heat and humidity is key.  For those with a central cooling system, home provides a welcome retreat on a warm and muggy day.

So, what do you do when your central AC isn’t quite doing the job?  How do you know if your cooling system needs repaired, replaced, or simply serviced?  Maybe your system is simply in need of a little tune-up, or perhaps you’ve lost some refrigerant, commonly referred to as Freon, from some small leak.  A quick run through of common signs your system may be lacking in Freon is the best way to answer the question “how to know if my AC is low on Freon?”

What is Freon?

Freon is the term used by most everyone to refer to the refrigerant, or coolant, used in many things, from home AC, to the cooling system in your car, to some refrigerators.  It’s actually the chemical refrigerant R-22, and, in terms of your home’s central cooling system, it acts as a fluid which absorbs and transfers the heat from the inside of your home, to the compressor unit outside, where it is cooled and recirculated, making your home that cool and comfortable respite from the heat and humidity.

Now that you know the purpose of Freon in your central cooling system, you know that the lack of this important component can surely disrupt your “cool” in more ways than one.  When you wonder to yourself how to know if your AC is low on Freon, here is a checklist to determine if you need refrigerant:

Probably one of the most telling signs you have a leak and are losing coolant is the accumulation of ice on the lines going from the outside unit to your home, or water which has pooled near your unit (from condensation or melting ice).  If you see any ice at all on your AC, contact Air Plumbing & Heating to inspect your AC.

If your registers and ducts are blowing warm or hot air, and no cool air is felt at all, you very likely are low on Freon. Any lack of coolant will cause the recirculated air to remain very warm, causing your AC system to take longer to cool, if it cools at all.

A sudden spike in your electric bill is always cause for concern, especially if your AC is in use.  This may be an early sign that your compressor is working extra hard, due to a lower supply of Freon.

What Can Cause My Freon To Be Low?

In most cases, lack of Freon is due to a small, but reparable, leak in a worn line. This is a fairly easy and quick fix, but we do not recommend attempting to fix it yourself. Finding a leak can be difficult, and without the expertise of an HVAC technician, you may be subjecting yourself to work and expenses that are not necessary.  Working with refrigerants, in any capacity, is best left to the experts.
