How Do I Add Freon To My AC?

For many in the Baltimore area, air conditioning as an essential creature comfort.  As the summer heat becomes more intense and the humidity is on the rise, central AC in your home provides welcome relief.  But, if your AC isn’t cooling as well as it should, and you find your home no longer feels like an escape from the sticky Maryland weather, your central AC may be lacking in Freon.

Freon, the common name for a refrigerant component of your AC, R-22, is necessary to keep cool air circulating throughout your home.  Freon absorbs the heat and processes it through your compressor, returning cool comfortable air into your home.  Your central AC doesn’t “run out” of Freon, but you can lose Freon through a leak somewhere in your cooling system.

Many home cooling systems develop leaks over time, usually from worn tubing, or connections which have come loose, allowing this essential component to escape.  Gradually, as your system loses Freon, you’ll begin to notice warm air blowing out of your vents, it may take longer for your home to cool, ice may build up on the exterior lines, and you could see a spike in your electric bill.

Freon Recharging – A Job for Professionals

It’s much easier to replace Freon in your home cooling system than replacing your entire AC, and much more budget friendly, but adding Freon to your central cooling system isn’t a job for the DIY homeowner.  Anytime your central AC system needs service or repair, the best approach is to engage the services of a licensed and certified air conditioning specialist.  Replacing Freon may not be the fix to your problem, especially if you have a leak.  This will only get worse over time and you could end up replacing your entire home cooling system.

That being stated, adding Freon to your AC isn’t a very labor intensive job, for the certified technicians at Air Plumbing and Heating Services.   Our technicians will:

  • Your professional AC service tech will first determine the right refrigerant for your system.  Every system is different and knowing the compatible and correct refrigerant, or Freon, is necessary to ensure proper functioning of your AC.
  • Next, your certified AC tech will don the proper protective gear.  Working with pressurized Freon can be a little risky, even for a professional, so your technician will wear gloves, a mask, and goggles to guard against injury.
  • Now, your Air Plumbing and Heating technician is able to add the Freon to your system by determining the appropriate area of the compressor, attaching the valves through which the Freon will draw, and ensuring the compressor is prepared to draw in the Freon.

The common signs of low Freon are warm air coming from your vent, low airflow, ice build-up, and higher power bills-could possibly indicate another type of AC issue, and adding Freon won’t fix the problem.  It could end up doing more harm than good.  Freon, as all refrigerants, is considered a noxious gas and can cause breathing issues.  Be certain to keep children and pets away from your compressor area when Freon is being added.
