7 Holiday Heating Tips for Maryland Homeowners

The holiday season can be hard on your bank account. Food, presents, and hosting company can all leave a dent. Saving money on your energy costs can help offset this dent just a little, without leaving family and guests feeling like they are visiting an igloo.

The following tips can help you keep your home comfortable over the holidays while reducing your overall energy costs.

Holiday Heating Tips

1. Open the Blinds

During the day when the sun is shining, open the curtains or blinds letting the warmth build up in your home.

2. Shut the Blinds

Once the sun is no longer entering your home, close all of the blinds and curtains, this will help you keep the warmth built up during the day in your home.

3. Seal Windows

If you have windows where you can feel the cold air rushing in, use some insulation tape and weather stripping to help seal them. This can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your home warm.

4. Use a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats are key in helping you reduce your energy costs. You can keep your home comfortable during the day, then have your thermostat drop the temperature overnight, warming it back up before you get out of bed in the morning. Use extra or thicker blankets to snuggle up with at bedtime and save some money on your energy costs.

5. Keep Fans On

If you have ceiling fans, switch them over in winter to push the warm air back down into your rooms.

6. Have Ductwork Checked

If your home is having trouble heating up, even when the furnace is pumping, you may want to consider having your ductwork checked. Leaks in your ductwork can be a big drain on your furnace and your home's heating costs.

7. Get Cozy

Placing cozy blankets throughout areas of your home can encourage family and guests to wrap up when they are cold. Adding layers can warm you up quickly and allow you to turn your thermostat down one or two degrees.
